Lunar New Year Rooftop Party

Join us for our Lunar New Year Rooftop Party, with lots of fun for the whole family!

Sunnybank’s New Year celebrations will once again finish with a bang, with a rooftop party and fireworks spectacular.

Immerse yourself in all the colour and culture of our pop up Asian laneway with lantern making, calligraphy workshops, tea ceremonies, percussion workshops and more. Enjoy a program of live entertainment including traditional lion dance, music, cultural dance and K-pop performances, plus we’ve got games and activities for all ages in our family game zone.

Grab some dinner from one of our authentic Asian restaurants as the sun goes down, and stay for our spectacular fireworks display, celebrating the new year with colour and excitement as we light up the night sky!

lion dance - Lunar New Year Events Program 22-26 January, 2020
Lion Dance and Kung Fu

One of the most popular features of any Lunar New Year celebration is the Lion Dance.  When done well, the dance is said to bring good fortune, prosperity and longevity to wherever it is performed. We welcome three different Lion Dancing performance groups to Sunnybank Plaza & Sunny Park, to help us welcome in the Year of the Rat 2020 and showcase these awe-inspiring skills.

Master Chen and the Southern Shaolin International Wushu Academy will perform the traditional Lion Dance each day outside HOYTS Cinemas Sunnybank Plaza, commencing at 10.30am, with Kung Fu demonstrations also included at weekend performances.

Sunny Park
During the week at Sunny Park, watch Master Tom Lo’s Martial Arts School perform outside Woolworths at Sunny Park. Master Lam & LTL Group will perform over the weekend at Sunny Park, including special nighttime performances with Neon Lions!

Following each performance, the fabulous Lion Dance will continue throughout the Centre and customers are encouraged to follow the Lions along their path.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is the gentle art of health and well-being for people of all ages and health conditions.  Come and see demonstrations by the International Wushu Tai Chi Academy in the Sunnybank Plaza Foodcourt during our Lunar New Year celebrations.

Chinese Calligraphy & Try-It-Yourself

Chinese calligraphy has been around for over 2000 years and is one of the highest forms of Chinese art. Calligraphy Master Eric Lin has been practicing this art form for over 40 years, winning many prestigious awards for his skills. Have your special Lunar New Year message scribed by Master Lin as a treasured memento of this year’s celebrations. Eric’s team will also be running a ‘try-it-yourself’ station, where you can experience this beautiful artform firsthand.

Plus, try your hand at something different with our calligraphy fan workshops at Sunny Park!

Ice Carving

Come and see the professional carvers from Ice Art transform a 1 metre high, 140kg block of ice into a detailed Lunar New Year sculpture in front of a live audience. Using a combination of chainsaws and chisels, the sculpture takes between one and two hours to complete and will last up to four hours.

Watch on as our talented craftsman, demonstrates the ancient art of fruit and vegetable carving, transforming every day fruit and vegetables into colourful works of art! Plus, you may also have the chance to try it for yourself.

Live Cooking Demonstrations

Experience free live cooking demonstrations with resident chef and food tour host, Tony Ching, as he showcases and samples a variety of Asian dishes. His Chinese heritage allows him to unveil the secrets to Asian cooking, with lots of interesting facts and family stories sure to keep the audience captivated.

Experience free live cooking demonstrations with Carmel Carmichael, as she showcases a variety of Asian dishes. She’ll give you loads of tips and hints along the way, plus you’ll even be able to sample some of the delicious dishes!

Art, Craft & Cultural Displays

The friendly team from the Taiwan Women’s League will be displaying and demonstrating a range of traditional arts and crafts in celebration of the Year of the Rat. They will be transforming plain paper lanterns, masks and fans into beautiful works of art. With games to play, face painting and souvenirs for sale, make sure you drop by and visit for some Lunar New Year fun.

Cultural Handcraft Demonstrations

photostudio - Lunar New Year Events Program 22-26 January, 2020

Traditional Costume Photo Studio

Take home a special souvenir of our Year of the Rat celebrations. Visitors will have the opportunity to be photographed in traditional Chinese and Taiwanese costume at our mini photographic studio. A variety of outfits will be available for you to try on free of charge, with souvenir 6”x8” photographs available for purchase from $10 or take home your entire photo shoot on USB for only $20.

Chinese Silk Embroidery & Workshops

Master Artist Jenny Gao, founder of the Xiu Zhen Ge Centre of Embroidery, will be returning for this year’s Lunar New Year celebrations. Jenny will be demonstrating the ancient art of Chinese Embroidery which she has practiced for over 20 years. As one of the oldest needlework styles, Chinese embroidery has a history dating back 2000 years.

We invite you to join in on one of Jenny’s beginner workshops to learn this beautiful skill and take home your own unique creation. Workshops will be held daily at a cost of $20 per person, with a variety of projects to choose from. Enquire at the display for bookings.

orchestra - Lunar New Year Events Program 22-26 January, 2020

AusOriental Orchestra & Friends 

The Sound of AusOriental Orchestra, is a group of local musicians who have come together for the joy of music. This non-profit group aims to use music as a means to bring people of all nations together to promote tolerance and harmony in a culturally diverse society. Along with the orchestra, Sunnybank Plaza audiences will also enjoy some Peking Opera and Chinese Dance performances featuring some friends of the AusOriental group.

J Percussion Music School

Tantalise your tastebuds and go on a journey of food discovery at Sunnybank Plaza!

Designed for food lovers and budding cooks alike, our Food Discovery Tours are led by chef Tong Ching who will help you navigate your way around this fabulous world of food in a fun and informative way. Tony will show you the best places to eat and shop for fresh food at Sunnybank Plaza, coupled with some great cultural stories and insights.

Each tour concludes with an authentic Asian meal, plus every participant will take home a bag of goodies valued at over $25.
