Cafe Mi

Cafe Mi is a Sunnybank institution that has been serving traditional eats to hungry hoards for more than 14 years.

Influenced by the cafes you would find on the streets of Hong Kong, Cafe Mi serves up authentic, tasty food in a casual setting.

The menu focuses on a fusion of different cultures, with dishes inspired from China, Japan, South-East Asia and Western countries – which is, according to owner Danny Lui, what you’d typically find in a cafe in Hong Kong.

Pork Trotters in Red Bean Curd Sauce

These slow cooked pork trotters are topped with red bean curd sauce and is a delightfully aromatic dish. The pork trotters are super tender and succulent while the sauce is sweet and flavoursome. This is traditionally eaten as a side dish but can be eaten as a main with rice.

The menu’s diversity suits many different tastes

“Hong Kong cuisine has been hugely influenced by the number of different cultures of people living there,” Danny said. “Hong Kong was a British colony in the past and it has had a long history of being an international place for business.”

From sandwiches to sweet and sour pork ribs and Singapore rice noodles, Danny said the menu’s diversity suited many different tastes and budgets.

“Usually everyone in Hong Kong go to cafes during their lunch break because it’s easy, quick and the food is good and cheap,” he said. “We do the same here. We cater for all different tastes and it’s very affordable.”

Danny has been running the eatery with his wife Susan for 14 years in Sunnybank. In that time, the menu has hardly changed, which is a good thing, as these Hong Kong style dishes have been perfected by their chefs.

“I am a chef so I make all my own sauces from scratch,” he said. “We have been making these dishes a very long time and we use recipes that are traditional and hundreds of years old.”

Bring your friends and take time sifting through the extensive menu. Start with their fried pork dumplings then order the crispy pork cutlet served with fried egg and rice, or try their signature sizzling black pepper steak with crispy egg noodles.

If you’re looking for a cheap eat quickly, the cafe has $13.50 lunch and dinner options that change daily and come with a soup and drink.

Cafe Mi also has a traditional Chinese oven so chefs can prepare and serve delicious Chinese roast meats. Musts include crispy roast pork, honey BBQ pork or succulent BBQ duck.

Hong Kong food is a melting pot of different cultures and cuisines. It is mainly influenced by Cantonese cuisine and food from other Chinese regions, especially Teochew, Hakka and Hokkien. As the island has a long history of being an international place of business, there are influences from Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian, Malaysian and western cuisines. There is also a strong British element to menus, from when Hong Kong was under British rule. Hong Kong is famous for food, and in just this one big city, food enthusiasts can indulge in all kinds of authentic cuisines from around the world. From street food to exclusive restaurants, Hong Kong has an unlimited variety of food for all tastes and class. Dishes are influenced by Cantonese cuisine, which is traditionally created so flavours of a dish are well-balanced and not greasy.  Spices are also used moderately to avoid overwhelming the flavours of the main ingredients of the dish. Besides pork, beef and chicken, Cantonese food uses almost all edible meats, including offal, chicken feet, duck’s tongue, frog legs, snake and snail. Hong Kong is renowned for its yum cha (dim sum), wonton soup, roast meats, char siu and noodles.
